Scrutinize before you sanitize

Writer's picture: Gareth GilmourGareth Gilmour

Not all sanitizers are created equal and in this “new normal” we are required to sanitize our everything but especially our hands at just about every turn.

Even if you have been the most die-hard Lockdowner you would have popped out to buy food or visit the pharmacy, in that brief journey you would have washed your hands before you go, packed mini sanitizer, sanitized on arrival before getting out the car and the minute you enter the store you are required to sanitize at the door, at the counter and you sanitize back in the car etc.

So one little trip to get canned fruit for the ice cream had you wash/sanitize your hands a minimum of six times!

With more contact than you get from your partner, you really should know what’s going onto your skin, the world health organisation (WHO) and centres for disease control (CDC) have recommended no less than 70 % alcohol-based sanitizers because the alcohol content is essential in breaking down the outer membranes that encapsulate viruses in order to kill all viruses and bacteria.

But be WARNED 70% alcohol-based sanitizers are not completely safe for use over an extended period, your best defence is still to wash with soap and water but that isn’t always practical.

Parents, in particular, should be making HOCL water-based sanitizers available for their kids.

Other than being highly flammable, Alcohol-based sanitizers, that contain triclosan, in particular, have been associated with troubling side effects, for example, Alcohol poisoning, antibiotic resistance, hormonal disruptions, weaker immune systems and adverse skin conditions including promoted ageing and dehydration which could lead to contact dermatitis.

HOCL sanitizers are safe for children, eco-friendly and water-based, it used widely in the dental, food and health industries. HOCL is a general sanitizer, so not exclusive to hands and is CDC approved and SABS tested to kill 99.99% of all known bacteria and viruses including Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Given that the end to this pandemic is an unknown, shouldn't you be making choices that will protect your family?
